The cost of living in Galati-Braila Metropolitan Area is relatively low compared to other large cities of the country, with 20% less than Cluj, Constanta, Timisoara and Iasi, reaching up to 30% less than Bucharest; shopping is cheaper in supermarkets and markets, while small shops are slightly more expensive.
The area has a diverse network of shopping centers: Auchan, Selgros, Metro, Careffour, Kaufland, Lidel, Penny-Market, Winmarkt, Bricostore, Danube Center Mall, Euromall, other shopping centers are scheduled to be developed in the near future .
Some examples of groceries prices:
- Bread (1kg): from 5 lei (about 1 €);
- Water (2L): from 2,5 lei (about 0.5 €);
- Milk (1L) from 7 lei (about 1,3 €);
- Eggs (box of 10 eggs): from 10 lei (about 2 €);
- Oil (1L): from 8 lei (about 1,8 €);
- Meat (1kg):
- Fish: from 30 lei (about 6 €);
- Pork: from 20 lei (about 4 €);
- Beef: from 35 lei (about 7 €);
- Chicken: from 15 lei (about 3 €);
How much we spend in a restaurant depends on its standard and location, with prices starting from 6 € (happy-hour or lunch menus with two dishes) to 25 € or more for one dish menu in restaurants with a higher standard.
Nightlife is much cheaper than in the capital, the entry into a club costs about 25-50 lei (around 5-12 €).
Cinema tickets cost around 25 lei (about 5 €), theater and concert tickets are around 40 lei (about 8 €).
Regarding the cost of residential rents, in central areas the price starts at 6 € / sqm and can reach double for luxury apartments in recent built residential complexes.
The cost of basic utilities:
- Electricity (1kWh) from 0.36 lei (about € 0.07);
- Gas (1Mwh): from 180 lei (about € 37,5).
According to a study released in Dicember 2021 by the National Institute of Statistics, expenditures per person in South-East Region are 515€ monthly and they are divided into the following segments:
- Buying food and drink: 45.7%
- Buying non-food goods: 22.30%
- Service Payment: 16.90%
